It is impossible to understand the centuries-old history of Warsaw without taking into account Jewish culture." Until the World War II, the Jewish community accounted for 30 per cent of Warsaw’s population, significantly affecting the city's development culturally, economically and architecturally. Only a fraction of pre-war buildings related to the Jewish tradition and culture have been preserved, but these places are still vividly present within the urban space.
Two options are available: a walk or a bus/van tour.
Tours aboard a bus or a retro van
Sights include:
- Grzybowski Square: the site of the former Jewish Theater, Próżna St., the Nozyk Synagogue, Bagno St.,
- remnants of the ghetto wall on Sienna St.,
- Bankowy Square: the site of the former synagogue on Tłomackie St., Jewish Historical Institute (from outside), Ghetto Heroes St. (formerly Nalewki),
- Chłodna St.,
- Muranów district, where the Warsaw ghetto was set up, the Jewish cemetery (outside),
- Anielewicza St.: Museum of the History of Polish Jews (Polin), the Ghetto Heroes Monument in Warsaw, the Monument to Willy Brandt.
The organisation of the tour depends on the time allocated to it by the participants, as well as the tour's starting and end points.
The tour includes 1 or 2 short walks around Grzybowski Square and around Polin Museum. The exact amount depends on the time available and weather conditions. It is possible to combine it with a visit to the Polin Museum, the Nożyk Synagogue or a walk around the Jewish Cemetery in Powązki.
