The Ikarus is a bus that hardly needs an introduction. It served as Warsaw’s primary city bus for over two decades. The first units arrived in Warsaw in December 1981, literally on the eve of the introduction of martial law. Their arrival was driven by the urgent need to replace the last retiring Jelcz “Cucumber” buses. The final Ikarus stopped carrying passengers in Warsaw at the end of 2012. Over the years, nearly 1,700 standard (short) Ikarus buses and around 1,900 articulated ones took to the streets of Warsaw—setting a record that will likely never be surpassed by any other city bus model.
Our Ikarus was withdrawn from service in 2008 and underwent a thorough and time-consuming restoration to bring back its original appearance. The bus features flooring imported from Hungary, refurbished characteristic white handrails, and an old-style driver’s cabin with many fine details such as original door-opening buttons and factory nameplates.
